In 1957, he became a ships’ carpenter and apprentice rigger at the Rocky Neck shipyard where he worked on many of the old schooners in the famous Gloucester fishing fleet. Leland experienced the opportunity of a lifetime working and sailing on the Brigantine Yankee, owned by famed mariner, Irving Johnson. It was working and sailing on this famous sailing ship that fueled Leland’s dream of someday building and sailing his own boat around the world.

He has been constructing the Frank Edmund himself, and together with his wife Cecily, will skipper and crew the yacht as it makes its five year voyage around the world. So come sail with us! In order to offer a financially attractive package and still ensure ample time aboard for everyone, the number of our owners will be limited. We can also arrange financing for you.
